Context / Issue

The central objective was to design a synchronous multiplayer gaming experience capable of creating a technological bridge between mobile and the big screen. Through the concept of "coopetition," the mission consisted of transforming the smartphone into a dynamic controller to steer a team confrontation (Margherita vs Fromagio) on a shared 3D screen. The main challenge was to smooth out the physical interaction while managing a chaotic and playful zone-control gameplay (the pizza).

This project was carried out during a workshop at the École de design Nantes Atlantique by a multidisciplinary team of six students. In a rapid development environment, we had to exploit real-time communication technologies (WebSockets) to synchronize players' actions and integrate live video feeds via WebRTC, thus transforming a simple game into an immersive social experience.

The major challenge lay in managing latency and fluidity: on the one hand, ensuring an immediate response between the movement on the smartphone and the action on the screen, and on the other hand, stabilizing the players' camera feeds via PeerJS in a frantic gaming context. It was also necessary to calibrate the gameplay balance (slowing down the pizza carrier) to encourage passing rather than individual play, while overcoming my own initial technical limitations thanks to AI.

Methodology

To successfully carry out this project, I adopted a hybrid approach combining interface design and Artificial Intelligence-assisted development:

  • Design-to-Code Synergy: I ensured the integration of the mockups we had made on Figma by using language models (Gemini and Claude via Antigravity) to translate my creative intentions into functional code, thus optimizing the production workflow.

  • Augmented Art Direction: I led the visual universe and the creation of communication assets by exploiting generative AI, ensuring a strong aesthetic consistency between the game and its promotion.

  • UX & Physics Engineering: I worked on mobile ergonomics (virtual joysticks with Nipple.js) and the technical integration of the physics engine (Rapier.js) and 3D rendering (Three.js).

Impact & Results

The project resulted in Tipolino, a functional and visually unique "party game" experience. The result is a robust system using a modern stack (Node.js, WebSockets, Three.js) where technology fades into the background in favor of the pleasure of playing. This first foray into Game Design demonstrated the effectiveness of AI as a creative lever, making it possible to deliver a coherent finished product, from the physical "pushing" mechanics to the global brand identity.
