Context / Issue
In a digital ecosystem saturated with notifications and micro-stimuli, our attention span has become a rare resource. Young professionals and students are subjected to constant cognitive overstimulation, heavily reducing their ability to maintain prolonged focus. When transposed to modern work environments like open-spaces or flex-offices, this vulnerability is multiplied by peripheral visual stimuli, which is the primary cause of psychological fatigue and decreased productivity.
Co-created with Basile Fruteau Delaclos, HALO was born from a desire to radically redefine the role of glasses. Rather than simply correcting vision, our goal was to design an active and passive concentration tool that filters out the cognitive overload of peripheral distractions, allowing users to finally reach a state of "flow".
Methodology
We worked closely together to conceptualize the utility and usage of the product, dividing the execution into two complementary areas of expertise:
Product Design & Engineering (Basile): Basile handled the 3D modeling and the technical architecture. He designed a frame that eliminates the traditional nasal bridge, distributing the weight evenly to the back of the skull for optimal comfort. The core innovation relies on SPD (Suspended Particle Device) technology. This dual-lens system allows the user to switch between an "ON" mode (fully transparent) and an "OFF" mode (peripheral vision passively opacified to block distractions). He also managed the eco-design aspect, selecting 100% recyclable aluminum and recycled plastics.
Brand Identity & Marketing Design (My Role): I was responsible for the editorial strategy, branding, and marketing design. I built a strong visual identity inspired by the Short-toed Snake Eagle (Circaète Jean-le-Blanc), a raptor known for its ability to isolate its environment to focus its vision perfectly. I developed a neo-futuristic graphic charter playing on the contrast between pure white, deep blue, and dynamic pink. Finally, I designed the UI/UX of the commercial experience (app and website) to ensure the disruptive nature of the product was communicated clearly and pedagogically. I also designed a working prototype of the glasses using an Arduino board, a pushbutton, SPD plastic sheets, and a few lines of code.
Impact & Results
Beyond its technological innovation, HALO carries a strong social impact. By blocking disruptive peripheral vision, the glasses directly reduce visual fatigue and offer a concrete inclusive solution for neuro-atypical profiles (ADHD, hypersensitivity) who face daily sensory overload.
The relevance of our holistic approach—combining industrial design, cutting-edge technology, and strong branding—was highly rewarded. Out of 48 submissions, HALO was selected as one of the 10 finalists for the SILMO Optical Design Contest. As a result, our frame will be officially prototyped and exhibited at the SILMO Paris trade show from September 25 to 28.
